Economic Affairs Applied Research Workshop

Economic Affairs is a journal for those interested in the application of economic principles to practical affairs. It aims to stimulate debate on economic and social problems by asking its authors, while analyzing complex issues, to make their analysis and conclusions accessible to a wide audience. This journal exists to improve the understanding of the role of markets in the economy and society. We are broadly inspired by classical liberalism and welcome a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches.

We welcome papers for our 2026 Research Workshop that address any of the following topics/areas:

• Philosophy, Politics and Economics
• Topics in the Classical Liberal tradition (see the scope of the journal at the Wiley website)

A selection of papers from the workshop will be considered for publication in Economic Affairs, subject to a peer review process.

Submission instructions

All proposals must be submitted using the form on this website by July 31, 2026. For this edition of the workshop, we ask that submissions consist of an extended outline of approximately 1,000–2,000 words.

Papers will be selected based on this outline. You will then have the opportunity to improve your outline during the workshop and to complete the final version of your paper after the event.

Submissions must include the extended outline of the research paper, an abstract and a brief V of the author(s). Documents should be attached. Please send the documents in English and pdf format. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will not be considered.

Economic Affairs is a peer reviewed journal published by the Vinson Centre at the University of Buckingham and the Institute of Economic Affairs, in collaboration with Universidad de las Hespérides and Universidad Francisco Marroquín, through academic publisher Wiley. It is edited by Professor Len Shackleton.

The journal is indexed by Scopus and is part of the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). It has published a wide range of authors from around the world, including a number of Nobel Prize laureates, while focusing on non-mathematical approaches to economic analysis.

For more than forty years, the journal has published original work and commentaries by hundreds of authors broadly sharing our approach to classical liberal political economy. Nowadays, in contrast with some of our other output, it has a particularly strong international focus. Three-quarters of our readership is based overseas, as is a large proportion of our authors. This was not the case when Economic Affairs was first launched by Arthur Seldon and the IEA back in 1980. The journal publishes main articles (around 7,000 words in length), as well as short articles, of no more than 3,500 words, reporting on larger studies which may be published in full elsewhere. The journal also has a book review section.
