Testimonial from Dr Antonio Nogueira
We were honoured to be able to welcome Dr Antonio Nogueira as a Visiting Scholar at the Vinson Centre during July and August.
Antonio is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Economics, and Economic History and Institutions, at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid.
During his time with the Vinson Centre, he was conducting research on his topic, ‘Ordoliberalism or Hayek? The Spread of Free Market Economy in the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy (1960-1980)’.
We were delighted to have Antonio join our academic community during this period. He generously shared his research and connected wonderfully with both colleagues and students alike.
We asked him if he would be kind enough to share a few reflections on his time with us:
“My time as part of the 2026 Visiting Scholar Programme at the Vinson Centre (University of Buckingham) has been an intellectually enriching experience, offering a rare opportunity to engage directly with the foundational sources of Classical Liberalism. The primary focus of my stay was exploring the bibliographic treasures of The Hayek Library, specifically delving into the Mark Blaug’s Collection. Examining these original texts first-hand has been invaluable for advancing my ongoing research project within the History of Economic Thought.
Beyond the archives, the Programme provided a dynamic platform for contemporary economic dialogue. I had the privilege of attending the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) “Food for Thought” event in London, which explored the critical theme of malinvestment in the Digital and AI Revolution. Furthermore, engaging in the masterclasses on the “Present and Future of Liberalism” at Camp Vinson 2026 offered inspiring intergenerational discussions on the challenges facing modern society.
What truly defines the Vinson Centre experience, however, is its collaborative academic community. The insights gained from conversations with the academic staff, including Senior Research Associates and Professors, provided fresh perspectives on my field of study and the broader achievements of the Centre.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Professor Juan Castañeda and his exceptional team. Their continuous support and the welcoming atmosphere they cultivate from day one has made this research stay an unforgettable milestone”.
We are immensely grateful for Antonio’s contributions to the intellectual life of the Vinson Centre. We wish him all the very best with his ongoing research, and look forward to welcoming him back in the future!
